I’ve presented password reset steps for Cisco 2600 series router  -

1.  Power off and back on the router

2.  Hold down control+break key if you are in Hyperterminal running  Windows98/2000/XP  or  hold down control+a f  key if you are in Minicom running Linux

3.  Now you are at rommon>

4.  Type  –>  confreg 0×2142

5.  Type  –>  reset

Now router reboot to its original configuration i.e. bypassing its startup configuration

6.  After rebooting it says –>

Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]: type no

7.  Now go to enable mode

8.  Type  –>  copy start run

9.  Now, in configuration mode… type  –>  enable secret yournewpassword

10.  Now change config register back to normal  i.e.  type  –>  config-register 0×2102

11.  Now save configuration  –>  copy run start  or  wr

12.  After that,  Reboot the router and login to your router with the yournewpassword

First of all you should have access to the PC with administrative privilege.

Case: Most administrators prefer to administer their servers remotely through remote desktop (formerly known as terminal services). But what if you forget to enable remote desktop before sending the server to a remote location, well, you still have the chance to do it remotely through remote registry.

On your xp machine, start->Run->regedit

> On the File menu, click Connect Network Registry.

> Type the computer name and then click Check Names

> Provide your administrative credential in the next dialog and click ok

> Now in the computer node that appear in the registry editor, drill down to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server

> Click Terminal Server, then in the detail pane double-click fDenyTSConnections

> In Value data, type 0, and then click OK

Now you need to restart the server remotely in order to implement the change, this can be done through command prompt, run the following command:

c:\> shutdown -m \\RemoteComputerName –r

After restarting, You can now start your Remote Desktop Sessions.
